Mild days, chilly starts

December is one of Prayagraj's most comfortable months. Afternoons reach about 25°C, but mornings and evenings can feel cold, with lows around 10°C. Rain is rare, and you'll often get clear, sunny days for walking around the city.

Take a boat out to the Sangam, where the Ganges and Yamuna meet, or explore Anand Bhavan without the sticky heat of summer. The water may feel too cold for a swim, and early mornings can be chilly on the river. Save longer outdoor visits for later in the day.

Christmas and winter crowds

Christmas is celebrated in Prayagraj, though December isn't known for a major city-wide festival. The famous Magh Mela takes place around the Sangam in winter, but it usually begins in January, not December.

December falls within the popular November-to-February travel season. You may find more visitors and stronger demand for rooms than in the hot summer or monsoon months. It's still generally calmer than the Magh Mela period, when pilgrims gather in large numbers.

If you hate crowds, visit the Sangam on a weekday rather than around Christmas or New Year.

Getting around Prayagraj in December

For a city break, December's dry weather works well for seeing the Khusro Bagh tombs and the museums at Anand Bhavan. Don't pack too much into the first hours of the day; the cold can make a slow breakfast feel better than a dawn start.

A useful local tip: ask your boat operator to take you to the Sangam's meeting point, not just along the riverbank. That's where you can see the different-coloured waters come together. Keep a warm layer handy for the ride back, especially if you go near sunset.
