December is one of Patna's easiest months for getting out and about. Afternoons reach 24°C, while nights can fall to 10°C, so sightseeing feels comfortable by day and chilly after dark. Rain is rare, and the long, sunny spells suit a walk along the Ganges or a visit to the Bihar Museum.

You can explore the Golghar and its steps without the sticky heat of summer. Save evening plans for a warm meal, and don't expect the riverfront to feel cosy once the sun goes down.

Festivals and winter plans

Christmas brings services and decorations to churches around the city. Patna is also the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh, and Takht Sri Patna Sahib in Patna City can draw pilgrims for Prakash Parv, his birth celebration. Its date can fall in December or January, so check the year's calendar before building your visit around it.

If you hate crowds, avoid arriving at the shrine during celebration days. Travelling with kids? The mild afternoons make a visit to Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park easier than in hotter months.

Busy season, local tip

December sits within Patna's popular November-to-February travel season, so expect more visitors than in the hotter months. The pleasant weather can also mean stronger demand for rooms and transport. It's still much quieter than a major festival day at Patna Sahib.

For a smoother shrine visit, take an auto-rickshaw to Patna City and ask to be dropped near Takht Sri Patna Sahib; traffic in the old lanes can slow the last stretch. Remove your shoes before entering, and keep time for the nearby market streets.
