Patna Weather in January

Cool, clear days

January is one of Patna's easiest months for getting around. Days feel mild, while mornings and evenings turn chilly, so you can explore without the sticky heat that arrives later. Rain is rare, and there's plenty of sunshine for a walk beside the Ganges or a visit to the Bihar Museum. Gandhi Maidan and the old city are comfortable stops, too.

Skip long outdoor outings at dawn or after sunset if you feel the cold. The riverfront can feel especially cool then, and fog may affect visibility on some mornings.

January festivals

Makar Sankranti, usually around January 14, brings kite flying and seasonal treats such as tilkut, a sweet made with sesame and sugar. Look for celebrations around Patna, but expect the exact date and local events to vary.

Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti can also fall in January. Patna is his birthplace, and Takht Sri Harmandir Sahib in Patna Sahib is an important pilgrimage site. If you hate crowds, avoid visiting the shrine during the main celebrations.

January sits within Patna's popular November-to-February travel season. It's generally busier than the hotter months, when sightseeing can feel tougher, and demand may be higher around festival dates. For a quieter visit, choose ordinary weekdays rather than a major celebration.

Travelling with kids? A sunny afternoon at Gandhi Maidan is easier than a chilly riverside morning. For Patna Sahib, take an auto-rickshaw from the old city and ask to be dropped near Takht Sri Harmandir Sahib; narrow lanes can make the final stretch slow. Stop for tilkut while you're nearby.
