April heat

Patna turns seriously hot in April. Afternoons can reach 41°C, and even nights stay warm, around 24°C. The air is fairly dry, with little rain, so you're more likely to feel the sun than get caught in a shower.

That makes long walks around Golghar or the ruins at Kumhrar tiring by midday. Keep outdoor sightseeing for the cooler parts of the day, then spend the hottest hours somewhere shaded or indoors. The Ganges riverfront is better enjoyed when the sun's lower. April is much hotter than March, and May gets hotter still, with more rain.

Festivals and crowds

Ram Navami or Mahavir Jayanti can fall in April, depending on the lunar calendar. If either does, you may notice more worshippers around Mahavir Mandir, close to Patna Junction. Dates vary, so don't assume a festival will happen during your visit.

If you hate crowds, April is generally quieter than Patna's more popular November-to-February season. The heat puts off many visitors, and rooms may cost less than in the cooler months, though local holidays can make busy spots livelier.

Getting around Patna in April

Travelling with kids? Keep sightseeing short and leave room for a cool break. April's long, sunny days are useful for seeing several sights, but the poor comfort score is a good warning against packing too much into the afternoon.

For a practical local stop, try litti chokha, a baked dough ball served with mashed vegetables, at a Patna eatery after your visit to Golghar. It's filling, so it works better as a relaxed meal than a quick snack in the heat. If you're choosing a month for outdoor exploring, November to February is a much easier bet.
