When to go to Dhanbad: a seasonal guide
November to February: the sweet spot
This is when Dhanbad is easy to like. Days are sunny and dry, and the air feels clear. November and February are mild enough for walking around all day. December and January are the coolest, with chilly mornings and nights. You'll want a jacket at dawn, then you'll shed it by lunch.
It's a good window for day trips. You can head out to Maithon Dam, or drive to Topchanchi Lake, without worrying about rain. Panchet Dam is also an easy outing. If you're visiting family or doing business in the coal belt, this is the most comfortable time to be on the road.
Durga Puja usually falls in October and is the big festival here. Diwali and Chhath Puja follow in October or November, depending on the lunar calendar. During Chhath, people gather at rivers and ponds at sunrise and sunset to offer prayers. It's lovely to see, but trains and buses fill up. Dhanbad is also a rail hub, so seats on the Delhi and Kolkata routes go fast around these dates.
March to May: hot and getting hotter
March is still pleasant, with warm days and cool nights. Then April hits. Afternoons reach 39°C, and May is the hottest month at 40°C. Nights stay warm too, so there's little relief.
May also brings the first stormy spells, on about half the days. If you can pick another month, do. If you can't, keep your outings to mornings and evenings, and spend the middle of the day indoors.
Holi usually lands in March. It's a fun time to be around, and the weather is still kind.
June to September: the monsoon
The rains arrive in June and reach their peak in July, when it rains nearly every day. Skies are grey, the air is thick, and sunshine is rare. Humidity stays high into September. Roads around the mining areas can turn muddy, and some trips get delayed.
It does have an upside. Hills and fields turn green, and the heat eases from its May peak. Hotels are quiet, and travel is the least crowded. But for sightseeing, it's the hardest stretch of the year.
October: a good shoulder month
October is the in-between month. Rain drops off, the sun returns, and the heat is gone. It stays humid for a while, but the weather is much easier. It's also festival time, so expect busy trains.
