October weather

October feels warm and damp in Ranchi, with highs around 27°C and nights near 18°C. The rain eases sharply from September, but you should still expect showers on several days. The air can feel sticky, so a long walk through the city may leave you tired by the afternoon.

Between showers there's plenty of sun for a visit to Rock Garden or a drive out to Dassam Falls. After recent rain the falls can run strong, but wet paths and slippery rocks make clambering close to the water a poor idea. Keep outdoor plans flexible, especially after heavy rain.

Puja crowds

Durga Puja and Dussehra often fall in October, though the dates shift each year, so check before you go. Ranchi's pandals draw local families and visitors, and the city gets busier around the celebrations. Gandhi Jayanti, on October 2, is a national holiday too.

If you enjoy festive lights and crowds, the pandals are worth a look. For quieter sightseeing, aim for days away from them. October is usually less crowded than the cooler peak season from November to February, though festival days can be an exception. Guesthouse demand may rise around the big celebrations, but prices are often lower than in the winter high season.

A local tip

October is a good month, rated 8/10, but November to February are even better, and November is almost as dry. Compared with September, you'll find more comfortable conditions for sightseeing, though the skies are less reliable than in winter. Don't count on a full day of dry weather for a long outing beyond the city.

For Hundru Falls, ask locally about the road and steps after rain before you set out. The route can be muddy, and the viewpoint is more useful than trying to get close to the water. If a shower rolls in, save a city stop such as the Jagannath Temple for another day.
