Winter and early spring: the comfortable months

November to March is the time to go. Days are mild, and the old city is pleasant to walk. In December and January the highs sit around 18 to 21°C, and nights get properly cold, about 5°C in January. You'll want a jacket for the evenings, especially if you're eating late at Namak Mandi, the famous spot for chargha (whole fried chicken) and karahi (a pan-cooked meat dish).

This is the best stretch for Qissa Khwani Bazaar, the old Storytellers' Market, and for the Mahabat Khan Mosque. It's also good for Peshawar Museum, with its Gandhara Buddhist sculpture. Day trips to the Khyber Pass and the ruins at Takht-i-Bahi are easier in cool air. Note that some trips need permits, so ask your hotel or a local operator first.

February and March are rated Excellent, but they're the wettest of the cooler months. February gets 103 mm and March 104 mm. Expect grey spells and muddy lanes, not all-day downpours.

April, October and the shoulder months

April and October are Good. October is the better pick: it's drier, with rain on only five days, and the heat has eased to about 32°C. April is warmer, at 31°C, and still has rain on ten days.

Both months suit a city break if you keep afternoons slow. Do your walking in the morning, then rest in a tea shop with green kahwa (a light, spiced tea).

May to September: hot, then wet

May is Fair, but it's already hot. June is the hottest month, with highs of 41°C and warm nights of 27°C. July is close behind at 40°C, though its lows of 28°C are actually the warmest of the year. Bazaars empty out by midday. If you must come, plan for early mornings and long indoor breaks.

July and August bring the monsoon. July is the wettest month, with 149 mm on 17 days, and August has the same number of rainy days. It's sticky, and heavy downpours can flood streets and disrupt travel on the roads out of town.

September is Fair. It's still hot at 36°C, but the rain eases.

Crowds and events

Peshawar doesn't have a tourist high season like a beach town. Most visitors are Pakistanis, and numbers rise around Eid holidays. Eid dates follow the Islamic calendar and shift about eleven days earlier each year, so check them before you book. During Ramadan, daytime eating spots often close, but evenings are lively. Winter is also when many overseas Pakistanis visit family, so rooms can feel tighter then.
