When to go to Rawalpindi: a seasonal guide
Winter and spring: the easy months
From November to March, Rawalpindi is at its best. Days are mild and mornings are cool. December and January nights drop to around 6–8°C, so you'll want a jacket for early walks. Rain is light in November and December, which are the driest months. February and March bring more showers, but they pass and the air stays fresh.
This is the season for city breaks. Wander Raja Bazaar (the old market) and eat chargha or a plate of chapli kebab. Cross into Islamabad for Faisal Mosque and the Margalla Hills trails. Day trips to Taxila, with its ancient Buddhist ruins, are comfortable now. Murree, the hill town up the road, gets cold and sometimes snowy in winter, so check road conditions first.
April is still pleasant, with warm days and cool nights. Cherry and plum blossom, plus the spring colour in the Margalla foothills, make it a good month for walkers.
May to September: hot, then soaked
May and June are the hottest months. June is the peak, with highs near 40°C and nights that barely cool. Afternoons are for staying indoors. If you must come, keep sightseeing to early mornings and evenings.
Then the monsoon arrives. July is the wettest month, with rain on about 21 days, and August isn't far behind. Showers are heavy, streets flood in places and the air turns sticky. Roads to the hills can be slow or blocked by landslides. September is easing off but still muggy.
October: a second good window
October is a quiet favourite. It's dry, sunny and warm, with the most sunshine of the year. Hiking in the Margalla Hills feels good again, and evenings are comfortable for street food around Saddar.
Crowds and events
Rawalpindi isn't a classic tourist stop, so crowds are mostly local. Travel jumps around Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, when families head home and buses and trains fill up. The dates move each year with the lunar calendar, so check them. Murree gets packed at weekends in summer and when snow falls. Pakistan Day on 23 March brings a military parade in nearby Islamabad. For the calmest trip with the best weather, aim for November or early March.
