When to go to Gujranwala: a seasonal guide
November to March: the sweet spot
This is when Gujranwala is at its best. Days are mild and dry, and evenings turn cool. December and January are the coldest, with lows around 7–8°C, so you'll want a shawl or a jacket after dark. By March it's warm and still pleasant, though showers become more common.
This is the season for walking around the old bazaars and eating. Try the city's famous chargha (whole fried chicken) and the heavy winter breakfasts of halwa puri and paye (slow-cooked trotters). If you're visiting family or on a food trip, it's the easiest time to go. Gujranwala is also known as a city of wrestlers, so ask locally about a traditional akhara (wrestling ring).
April to June: hot and dry
April is fair, but it heats up fast. May and June are the hottest, and June is the very hottest at 43°C with warm nights near 29°C. Afternoons are harsh. Most people stay indoors from midday until the evening.
If you must come, plan your outings for early morning or after sunset, when families head out for ice cream and late dinners. Wheat harvest in April brings a busy, golden feel to the surrounding Punjab farmland. Vaisakhi, a spring harvest festival, is celebrated by Sikh pilgrims across the region in mid-April.
July to September: monsoon
July is the wettest month, with 241 mm of rain on 21 days. August is close behind. It's sticky, with humidity up to 68% in August, and heavy downpours can flood low streets. Travel by road can be slow.
The upside is greener fields and a break from the worst heat. Tea, pakoras (fried fritters) and a rain-soaked rooftop are a local habit. If you don't have to travel now, you'll find the other seasons far easier.
October: a good in-between
October is the quiet bridge month. Rain nearly stops, the sun shines for about ten hours a day, and highs ease to 33°C. It's rated Good, not Excellent, because afternoons are still warm. Business and family visits fit well here.
Crowds don't follow tourist seasons in Gujranwala. Busy times come with Eid holidays and wedding season, which peaks in the cooler winter months. Trains and buses fill up around Eid, so travel a few days either side if you can.
