May feels warm and mostly dry, with sunny days and comfortable evenings. The average high is 25°C, and rain falls on about four days, so showers are unlikely to shape most plans. It's a good month for walking around the Tombs of the Kings or exploring Paphos Old Town without summer's stronger heat.

The sea and pool may still feel cool to some swimmers. Long afternoons on the exposed rocks at Petra tou Romiou can feel hot, so save a long visit there for later in the day. May brings plenty of daylight, but don't assume every beach day will feel like midsummer.

Things to do and May events

The Paphos Archaeological Park is a strong choice in May. You can take your time over the Roman mosaics, then wander towards the harbour before the day gets too warm. A coastal walk also works well in the spring weather.

Labour Day, on May 1, is a public holiday in Cyprus, and some shops may close. Paphos has also held an Anthestiria flower festival in May, though the date and programme can vary. If you hate crowds, the quieter days around the holiday are a better bet for the harbour and its restaurants.

Crowds, costs and a local tip

May sits between the quieter winter months and the busy summer season. You'll usually find fewer holiday crowds than in July and August, while hotels and flights can cost less than at peak summer. It's still a popular time to visit: spring is one of Paphos's best seasons, so don't expect the town to feel empty.

At the Archaeological Park, head for the mosaics earlier in the day. Much of the site is open and exposed, with little shade. Afterwards, follow the path towards Paphos Harbour for a meal of grilled halloumi or fresh fish.
