Hari and holiday crowds

Naha Hari, the city's dragon boat festival, is usually held around Golden Week in early May. Races take place at Naha Port, with local celebrations nearby. Golden Week brings a surge of domestic visitors, so the city and transport can feel busy, and prices may rise.

Outside that holiday period, May is generally quieter than the peak winter months, when Naha has its best weather. You may find a calmer city and better value after Golden Week, though the rain can put some visitors off.

Make a rainy-day plan

Families who want easy sightseeing may prefer the city's covered shopping arcades to a long day at the beach. The weather can change your plans, so don't count on clear skies for a full day outdoors.

For a practical rainy-day stop, head to Makishi Public Market, just off Kokusai-dori. You can eat upstairs after choosing seafood downstairs, though the market's layout and services may change. The Yui Rail also links central Naha with Shuri, making it easier to reach the castle area without relying on a long walk in the rain.
