When to go to Naha: a seasonal guide
Winter to early spring: mild and grey
From December to March, Naha is at its most comfortable. Days are mild, with highs around 20°C, and it never gets cold the way mainland Japan does. February is the only month rated Excellent. The catch is the sky. Sun is scarce, and it's often cloudy with light rain on and off. It's fine for walking Kokusai-dori (the main shopping street), eating at Makishi Public Market, or visiting Shuri Castle's grounds. Beach days are a gamble, and the sea is too cool for many swimmers.
Look out for cherry blossoms in late January. Okinawa's are pink and bloom much earlier than anywhere else in Japan. The Naha Marathon in December and the Naha Tug-of-War in October bring crowds of a different kind, so rooms fill up around those dates.
May and June: the rainy season
Okinawa's rainy season, called tsuyu, is the wettest stretch of the year. June is the worst, with 305 mm of rain on 23 days and humidity near 90%. May isn't much better. Expect sticky afternoons and plans that change by the hour. The upside is fewer tourists and lower prices. If you don't mind a museum day or two, the Okinawa Prefectural Museum and Tsuboya pottery street make good rainy-day stops.
July to September: hot, sunnier and busy
Once the rains ease, the sun comes out. July and August are the sunniest months here, and August is the hottest, with highs of 30°C and warm nights. This is the time for beaches. Naha's Naminoue Beach is handy, but most people head to Kerama Islands for clear water and snorkelling. Japanese school holidays fall in late July and August, so it's the high season. Typhoons are also a real risk through September, and flights and ferries can be cancelled with little warning. Keep your schedule loose.
October and November: the sweet spot for beach lovers
If you want warm sea and fewer people, aim for October. Highs are 27°C, the rain is lighter, and the typhoon risk is fading. November is cooler and calmer, with enough warmth for a coastal walk or a dip. In October, the Naha Tug-of-War is the big event. Teams pull a giant rope, about 200 tonnes in weight, through the streets. It's worth planning a visit around, if you can.
