Visiting Naha in July
July: hot and sticky
Naha is hot through the day and barely cools at night. High humidity makes even a short walk along Kokusai-dori feel tiring. Rain falls on many days, often in passing showers, so keep indoor stops in your day. June is much wetter, but July still isn't a reliably dry beach month.
The Yui Rail is handy for getting between Naha Airport, Makishi and Shuri without walking far in the heat. Shuri Castle is worth seeing, though its outdoor grounds can feel exposed. Save the covered arcades around Heiwa-dori and Makishi Public Market for a rainy spell or the hottest part of the afternoon. Swimming at Naminoue Beach can work between showers, but don't count on long, calm stretches outdoors.
July: holiday season
Marine Day, a national holiday, falls in July, and Japanese school summer holidays begin later in the month. Naha can feel busier then, especially around Kokusai-dori and the airport. Prices tend to be higher than in the quieter winter months, when Naha is also cooler and drier. July isn't the peak of Okinawa's rain, but showers and humid air can still disrupt plans.
Families who want beach time may enjoy Naminoue, but it's worth keeping a nearby indoor stop in reserve for sudden rain or heat. Naha doesn't have one major July festival to build your trip around; the well-known Naha Otsunahiki takes place in October, not July.
A useful local tip
For a rainy afternoon, head to Makishi Public Market from the covered Heiwa-dori arcade. You can browse local fish and Okinawan ingredients without crossing open streets in a shower. The market also gives you a chance to try goya champuru, a local stir-fry made with bitter melon. Stick to short outdoor visits around Shuri or the beach, then let the arcades and market fill the gaps.
