December: warm and wet

Nadi stays warm, with highs around 29°C and nights near 25°C. But rain falls on 22 days, and humidity makes afternoons feel sticky. Expect brief showers as well as longer wet spells, with cloud often limiting sunshine.

You can still enjoy a swim at Wailoaloa Beach or visit the Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple between showers. Boat trips from Port Denarau can be less appealing when rain or rough seas spoil the views. Save longer walks around the Garden of the Sleeping Giant for a clearer spell.

Christmas and holiday crowds

Christmas Day and Boxing Day bring a quieter feel to some local businesses, while churches and family gatherings mark the holiday. New Year celebrations follow soon after. December also starts Fiji's busy holiday period, especially around Christmas and New Year.

If you hate crowds, avoid the late-month rush around Port Denarau and Nadi's airport. Prices and demand tend to rise then compared with quieter, wetter weeks earlier in the month. July and August are generally better months for weather, but they're popular too.

Make rain work for you

Travelling with kids? A rainy spell can suit a relaxed visit to the Sabeto mud pools and hot springs, where getting muddy is part of the fun. Check locally before setting out after heavy rain, as conditions can affect access.

For a practical local stop, try kokoda, a Fijian dish of fish cured in citrus and mixed with coconut milk, at a Nadi restaurant. It makes an easy lunch between showers. December is wetter than November, and January is wetter still, so you may find the days feel especially changeable.
