December: warm and very wet

Suva stays warm in December, but frequent rain and high humidity can make the day feel sticky. Showers are common, with rain falling on 23 days on average. Cloud and limited sunshine can interrupt beach plans, and muddy paths make longer walks less appealing.

You can still explore Suva's indoor sights, including the Fiji Museum, then duck into a café when a shower rolls through. Thurston Gardens is lovely between downpours, but expect damp paths. December is wetter than November, though January is wetter still. July and August are much better choices if you want drier weather.

Christmas in the capital

Christmas Day and Boxing Day bring public holidays, and Suva marks the season with church services and festive gatherings. Some shops and eateries may close or shorten their hours, so the city can feel quieter on the holidays themselves. New Year's Eve is another busy time for local celebrations.

If you hate crowds, you'll usually find Suva less packed than Fiji's resort islands, even during the holiday season. Still, year-end travel can make flights and accommodation more in demand than in quieter months. Confirm opening hours before heading to a specific museum or restaurant.

Make rain work for you

Keep plans flexible: visit the Fiji Museum or Suva Municipal Market when the rain sets in, and save a walk along the waterfront for a clearer spell. The market is a good place to try kokoda, a Fijian dish of fish marinated in citrus and coconut milk.
