Visiting Suva in January
January: warm and very wet
Suva feels hot and sticky in January, with warm nights and frequent rain. Showers fall on most days, and thick cloud can leave you with little sunshine. December is slightly drier, while February is wetter, so January sits between two rainy months.
You can still explore central Suva between showers. The Fiji Museum, set in Thurston Gardens, makes a good indoor stop, and the covered parts of Suva Municipal Market are lively even in wet weather. Save a long walk around Colo-i-Suva Forest Park for a drier spell; muddy tracks and swollen streams can make it less pleasant.
New Year and holiday crowds
New Year's Day is the main January holiday to know about. Some businesses may close or keep shorter hours, so don't count on every café or shop being open.
The holiday period can bring more visitors and firmer prices than quieter months, especially around New Year. Suva is still less of a resort stop than Fiji's island beaches, so it usually feels more like a working city than a packed holiday town. If you hate crowds, visit after the New Year rush; July and August are better months overall for weather.
Make the rain work for you
Travelling with kids? Keep the Fiji Museum in mind for a rainy afternoon, then wander through Thurston Gardens when the clouds lift.
A practical Suva tip: use the covered stalls at Suva Municipal Market to try local food without getting caught in a shower. Ask for kokoda, a Fijian dish of fish cured in citrus and mixed with coconut milk. January isn't ideal for a beach-focused trip, and wet afternoons can disrupt outdoor plans, but the city's markets and museums still make for a worthwhile visit.
