February is a fair month for Medellín, scoring 4.6 out of 10, and rain is the main reason. Highs reach about 25°C and nights stay mild, but rain falls on 18 days and cloud often softens the sunshine. Showers can interrupt a day out, though they rarely rule out sightseeing altogether. If you can pick your month, June and October to December give you clearer skies. February is still the drier of the wet months around it, with less rain than January or March.

Rainy spells are a good excuse to head indoors to the city's museums and cafés. When the weather clears, walk around Plaza Botero or ride the Metrocable for views over the valley. Save any long hike for a dry spell, since muddy trails and cloudy views can dampen the fun. Families can mix outdoor stops with a visit to Parque Explora.

Events and crowds

February doesn't have a major fixed festival in Medellín. Carnaval de Barranquilla often falls around this time, but it's held in Barranquilla, not here, so check the dates before you build it into your trip.

Without the busy December and January holidays, February is generally quieter, and you may find better hotel rates. It's not quiet everywhere, though. Weekends still draw local visitors to El Poblado and Provenza. If you prefer calmer evenings, Laureles is a good choice, with plenty of restaurants away from the weekend crowds.

Making February work

Keep your plans flexible. On a rainy afternoon, the Museo de Antioquia, right by Plaza Botero, is a better bet than a far-flung outdoor outing. If you're visiting Comuna 13, its outdoor escalators and street art are best enjoyed when the steps and paths aren't slick.

A useful local tip: take the Metrocable from Acevedo toward Santo Domingo on the clearer part of the day. Low cloud can hide the valley views, so treat the ride as a bonus rather than a sure thing. Check the Metro de Medellín service updates before you set out, especially after heavy rain.
