February is hot, bright and usually dry. You'll get long sunny stretches, with only a couple of rainy days in the month. That makes it a good time for the Panama Canal's Miraflores Locks, Casco Viejo's streets and an afternoon along the Amador Causeway.

The heat can feel sticky, especially on exposed walks. Save the long Casco Viejo wander for morning or evening, and don't count on a cool afternoon for a break from the sun. For families with young children, shaded stops at the Biomuseo can be easier than a long walk along Amador.

Carnival and crowds

February often brings Carnaval de Panamá, though its dates change each year. Expect music, dancing and water celebrations around the days before Ash Wednesday. The city can feel much busier during Carnival, and hotel prices may rise around the festivities.

February is also part of Panama's high season, so expect more visitors and firmer prices than in the wetter months. Outside Carnival, it's still a popular time to visit, as January through March are among the best months for weather. If you'd rather have quieter streets, plan Casco Viejo visits away from Carnival events.

Make the heat work for you

With little rain, outdoor sightseeing is easier than in the wetter months, but the midday sun can wear you down. Choose air-conditioned museums or a long lunch during the hottest part of the day. The Mercado de Mariscos is a good stop for ceviche, a local dish of seafood cured with citrus.

A practical route: take the Metro to 5 de Mayo, then walk to the Mercado de Mariscos for lunch. From there, you can continue toward Casco Viejo, but the exposed walk may feel tough in the afternoon heat.
