When to visit Panama

Dry season is the easy season

Panama City has two seasons, not four. The dry season runs from roughly December to April, and January to March is the sweet spot. Skies are mostly clear and the breeze helps. You can walk the cobbled streets of Casco Viejo, the old quarter, without ducking into a doorway every hour.

March is the hottest month at 31°C, so afternoons feel heavy on the Amador Causeway and around the Panama Canal's Miraflores Locks. Go to the locks in the morning, when the ships are lining up and the heat hasn't built yet.

The green season is wetter than you think

From May to November it rains, and October is the wettest month at 283 mm. Rain usually comes as a heavy afternoon downpour, not an all-day drizzle. Mornings are often fine, so plan your sightseeing early and keep the afternoon for a museum like the Biomuseo, or a long lunch.

The upside is real. Prices tend to drop, tables are easy to find and Metropolitan Natural Park is lush and green. If you don't mind a soaked afternoon now and then, this is a good time to visit.

Holidays, events and crowds

High season matches the dry months, with the busiest stretch around Christmas and New Year. Carnival, held in the days before Lent (usually February or early March), is the big one. Panama City empties out as locals head to the interior, and the main parties, including the famous ones in Las Tablas, draw huge crowds. Book rooms early if you want to join in.

Panama's Independence Day season in November is also busy. The big dates are 3 November (separation from Colombia), 4 November (Flag Day) and 28 November (independence from Spain). Expect parades, school bands and some closed shops.

Travelling with kids? School holidays around December and January fill beach hotels. The low season, roughly May to November, is quieter, though Panama City stays lively all year because of the canal, business travel and flight connections.

If you're torn, pick February. It's dry, festive and still comfortable enough to enjoy the city on foot.
