Best Time to Visit Panama City
Panama · weather by month, temperature and rainfall
The best time to visit Panama City is January to March, when the weather is at its most comfortable for sightseeing and time outdoors. Temperatures barely change through the year: highs stay between 28°C and 31°C, so rainfall matters far more than heat when choosing when to go. The rainy season runs over May to November; October is the wettest month with about 283 mm (11.1 in) of rain. July is the least comfortable month, mainly because of the rain.
When to go to Panama City: a seasonal guide
January to March: the dry season
This is the best stretch, and it's easy to see why. Days are hot but not heavy, with plenty of sun and very little rain. February is the driest month, with just two rainy days. The trade winds make the evenings pleasant for a walk along the Cinta Costera, the waterfront path by the bay.
It's also high season. Hotels fill up, and the Casco Viejo (the old quarter) gets busy with visitors. If you want to island-hop to the San Blas islands (Guna Yala) or take a day trip to Taboga Island, you'll have calm skies and clear water. Carnival falls in the days before Lent, usually in February or early March. It's loud, joyful and packed, so expect the city to empty out as locals head to Las Tablas and the Azuero Peninsula.
April and December: the in-between months
Both months rate Fair. December still has a few sunny days, and showers tend to come in short bursts. April is the shift: rain jumps sharply and the sun fades. It's still fine for a city break if you don't mind ducking into a café now and then.
December is lively in a quieter way. The holidays bring lights and family gatherings. Late in the month, prices and crowds climb again. April is a good pick if you want lower prices but still want some dry afternoons. Holy Week (Semana Santa) usually falls in March or April, and many Panamanians travel then, so the city feels oddly quiet.
May to November: the green season
Be honest with yourself about this one. It rains on most days, often 25 or more a month, and the sky stays grey. Humidity sits above 80%, so it feels sticky even when the rain stops. October is the wettest month at 283 mm, though every month from May to November is close.
Rain usually comes in heavy downpours, so mornings can still work for a visit to the Panama Canal's Miraflores Locks. Afternoons are better for museums like the BioMuseo. If you hate crowds, this is your window. Hotels are cheaper, and Casco Viejo is calm. November has a bonus: Independence celebrations, with parades and flags across the city early in the month.
