Visiting Medellin in March
March skies and showers
March is a poor month for a visit to Medellín, scoring 3.1 out of 10, mainly because of the rain. Highs reach 25°C, but rain falls on 23 days, and the air can feel sticky and cloudy. Showers can interrupt a walk, so keep your outdoor plans flexible.
The Museo de Antioquia and nearby Plaza Botero are good options when the clouds lift. On a dry spell, take the Metrocable towards Parque Arví for forest trails and city views. After heavy rain, though, those paths get muddy, and thick cloud can hide the views altogether. Long, exposed hikes are less appealing this month.
Events and local rhythms
Semana Santa, or Holy Week, can fall in March or April, depending on the year. If it lands in March, expect church services and processions, especially around the central churches. It can bring more visitors and change opening hours. March 8 is International Women's Day, but it isn't a major citywide festival.
If you want quieter museum visits, aim for a March week outside Holy Week. And if you're hoping for the Feria de las Flores, plan for August instead. Medellín's big flower festival takes place then, not in March, so you won't be dealing with its crowds this month.
Crowds and practical tips
Outside Holy Week, March is usually calmer than December and January, and far less busy than August. Accommodation rates may be gentler than in those peak periods, though prices vary. March is also wetter than February, and April is wetter still, so if rain is your main concern, June and October to December are the better bets.
For the Metrocable ride to Parque Arví, check the sky from the Santo Domingo station before you head uphill. Cloud can cover the valley, and rain makes the park's trails slick. If the afternoon turns wet, keep a museum or café stop around El Poblado in mind as a backup.
