Visiting Medellin in April
April: wet afternoons
April feels warm, damp and often overcast in Medellín. The high is 24°C, but rain falls on 25 days and sunshine averages just 1.7 hours a day. Showers can interrupt outdoor plans, and the humid air makes walking uphill feel harder than it should.
Still, you can get plenty done between showers. Visit the Museo de Antioquia and Plaza Botero, or ride the Metro between central sights. Save Comuna 13's outdoor escalators for a dry spell, since wet steps can be slippery. If you're hiking, keep your day flexible rather than committing to a long trail.
Holy Week and crowds
Semana Santa, or Holy Week, sometimes falls in April. Churches hold services and processions, and many Colombians travel during the holiday, so the city can feel busier around those days. Dates change each year, so check the calendar before you book.
Outside Holy Week, April is usually quieter than Medellín's popular dry-season months, and you may find accommodation deals. Holiday travel can push demand and prices back up, though. Families who enjoy museums and city outings can still have a good trip, as long as they're happy to swap outdoor plans when the rain sets in.
A practical Medellín tip
When a shower rolls through, use the Metro to reach an indoor stop. From Parque Berrío station, Plaza Botero and the Museo de Antioquia are close by, so you can move between them without a long walk in the rain. For a local meal, order bandeja paisa in a covered restaurant rather than planning a picnic.
April isn't the easiest month for outdoor sightseeing. March is a little less wet, and May is wetter still, so April sits in the middle of a rainy stretch. The good news is that showers rarely wipe out the whole day. Keep your plans close to Metro stations and leave room for a change of pace.
