October: wet afternoons

October is still firmly in Guatemala City's rainy season. Rain falls on 23 days on average, and the air can feel damp and sticky. Showers often interrupt afternoons, so leave time for delays and keep outdoor plans flexible. The high is 23°C, but cloudy skies and rain can make the day feel cooler.

You can still explore the Centro Histórico, ducking into the Metropolitan Cathedral or the National Palace between showers. The Museo Popol Vuh is a good indoor stop in Zone 10. Skip long walks in parks or day trips that rely on clear roads if the forecast looks unsettled.

Revolution Day

October 20 is Revolution Day, a national holiday marking the 1944 revolution. Commemorations and marches can bring crowds and road closures, especially around the Centro Histórico. Give yourself extra time if you're travelling across the city that day.

If you hate crowds, visit the central sights on another day and use the holiday for a quieter museum visit in Zone 10.

Quieter, but rainy

October is usually quieter than the popular November-to-April travel season. You may find better hotel rates than in those drier months, though prices vary. September is wetter, while November is much drier, so October sits between a soggy low season and the busier high season.

A useful local tip: if rain catches you near Plaza de la Constitución, step into the covered passages around the square instead of waiting outside. You can still see the National Palace and cathedral, then take a break with a hot bowl of kak'ik, a traditional turkey soup, at a nearby comedor.
