Visiting Guatemala City in August
August weather in the city
August is mild but damp. Days reach 24°C, while evenings cool to 15°C. Rain falls on 27 days, and high humidity can make the city feel sticky. Expect grey skies and short sunny spells rather than a reliably clear day.
You can still visit the National Palace and the indoor museums in Zona 13. Leave time for rain delays, and avoid counting on a dry walk through the archaeological site of Kaminaljuyu. Its outdoor paths can get muddy.
Feria de Jocotenango
Around August 15, Guatemala City celebrates the Feast of the Assumption with the Feria de Jocotenango. The fair takes place near Hipódromo del Norte in Zone 2, with rides, food stalls and local crowds. Try a tostada or a sweet rellenito while you're there.
If you hate crowds, visit the fair on a weekday, or enjoy the city's museums instead. The celebration can make the area around the fair busier than usual.
Crowds and practical tips
August is rainy-season low season for visitors, unlike the drier months from November to April. You'll generally find fewer tourists, and hotel rates may be lower than in those popular months. The fair is a local exception, so expect more people near Hipódromo del Norte around August 15.
Travelling with kids? Keep an indoor stop ready for wet afternoons. The Museo Popol Vuh, on the Universidad Francisco Marroquín campus, is a useful choice for Maya art and history. If you're going to the fair, ask your hotel about the best route to Zone 2; heavy rain can slow city traffic.
