Best Time to Visit Guatemala

Dry season: November to April

For most trips, this is the sweet spot. Skies are clear, roads are drier, and volcano views are far more likely. Guatemala City is at its best from November to April, with warm days and cool evenings. The capital sits high up, so it never feels as steamy as the coast.

Antigua, Lake Atitlán and Tikal all work well in these months. If you want to climb Acatenango volcano and see lava glowing at night, you'll want a clear sky. Dry season gives you the best shot, though it gets very cold at the top.

April is the hottest month in the capital, at 29°C. It's still comfortable. The coast and the Petén jungle around Tikal feel much hotter and stickier, so expect sweaty afternoons there.

Rainy season: May to October

Rain usually comes in the afternoon, not all day. Mornings are often bright, so you can plan hikes and sightseeing early and relax later. September is the wettest month in Guatemala City, with 243 mm. No other month is listed as wetter in our data.

The upside is green hills, fewer visitors and quieter ruins. The downside is muddy trails and the odd landslide closing a road in the highlands. Ask your shuttle driver about conditions before you set out for Semuc Champey or Lanquín.

Holidays and crowds

Semana Santa, the week before Easter, is the big one. Antigua fills with people for its street processions and the colourful sawdust carpets laid on the cobbles. Hotels sell out and prices climb. If you love atmosphere, it's worth seeing. If you hate crowds, avoid it.

Other busy times are Christmas and New Year, plus the days around All Saints' Day on 1 November. In Sumpango and Santiago Sacatepéquez, locals fly giant kites to honour the dead. It's a striking sight.

High season runs roughly November to April. Low season is the wet months, when you'll find easier bookings and quieter streets. For the best mix of good weather and fewer people, try November or early December.
