When to go to Guatemala City: a seasonal guide
November to April: the dry season
Guatemala City sits high in the mountains, so it's mild all year. Dry-season days are warm and bright, and nights are cool. December and January are the coolest, with lows around 12°C. A light jacket helps in the evenings, especially in Zona 1 around the Palacio Nacional.
February and March are the driest and sunniest. Rain is rare, so they suit a city break well. You can walk Zona 4's Cuatro Grados Norte, visit the Museo Popol Vuh, and take day trips to Antigua without worrying about the sky. April gets warmer and the first showers return, but it's still rated Excellent.
Most travellers use the capital as a gateway. If you're flying in to climb Pacaya volcano or see Tikal, the dry months give you the clearest views.
May to October: the rainy season
It rains most days from May to October. June and September are the wettest, with September just ahead at 243 mm. Showers usually come in the afternoon, so mornings can still be pleasant. Skies are grey for long stretches, and humidity stays high.
It isn't a washout, though. Museums are a good plan for wet afternoons. The Museo Nacional de Arqueología y Etnología in Zona 13 is one. Hotels are quieter and the hills around the city turn very green. Traffic is the real headache, because heavy rain slows the roads. Volcano views are often hidden by cloud, so Pacaya hikes are best done early and with low expectations.
Festivals and crowds
The busiest time is Semana Santa, Holy Week, in March or April depending on the year. Processions fill the streets, and the carpets of coloured sawdust (alfombras) are worth seeing. Antigua gets the biggest crowds, but the capital has its own processions too. Expect full hotels and some closed shops.
Late October and early November bring Día de Todos los Santos on 1 November. Families visit cemeteries and fly giant kites at Sumpango and Santiago Sacatepéquez, a short drive away. Fiambre, a cold salad eaten for the day, shows up on every table. Christmas and New Year are lively too, with fireworks in the streets.
The mid-year school break is short, so the capital rarely feels packed outside holidays. For the best mix of sunshine and calm, go in January or February. Want fewer people and don't mind rain? Try late October.
