When to go to Tegucigalpa: a seasonal guide
Dry season: November to April
This is the time to come. November to February is the sweet spot, with warm days and cool evenings. January and February are the driest of the cooler months, and December and January top our comfort scores. You can wander Plaza Morazán and the old cathedral without dodging downpours.
March and April get hot. Afternoons climb to 33°C, and the city can feel dusty and dry. April also brings more rain days, so the heat starts to break. If you hate heat, aim for the months before.
Holy Week (Semana Santa) falls in March or April, depending on the year. Many Hondurans travel to the coast, and the capital goes quiet. Some shops and restaurants close for a few days. Christmas and New Year bring family visits and more traffic, but Tegucigalpa never gets tourist-packed.
Rainy season: May to October
It rains on most days from May to October, usually 20 days or more a month. June and September are the wettest, with September just ahead on rainfall at 227 mm. Skies stay grey, and October feels the stickiest, at 86% humidity.
July is the least bad of the wet months, with fewer rainy days. Rain often comes in heavy bursts, so you may get a few dry hours. Museums like the Museo para la Identidad Nacional make a good plan B. Steep hillside streets can turn slippery, and traffic gets slow.
Do you want green hills and fewer visitors? Then it's fine. Just don't expect big views from Parque Nacional La Tigra, the cloud forest north of the city. Trails get muddy, and the clouds often hide the scenery.
Which month for which trip
For hiking at La Tigra, go in December to February. Trails are drier and the air is cool in the forest. For city sightseeing in Comayagüela, the Basílica de Suyapa or the viewpoint at El Picacho, pick November to January.
September brings Independence Day on the 15th, with school marching bands and parades in the streets. It's a fun cultural moment, but bring a rain jacket. The wet season is also low season. You'll have quieter streets, though less sun.
Travelling with kids? Choose the dry months, when outdoor stops are easier. On a tight budget and fine with showers? Try July.
