When to go to Managua: a seasonal guide
Dry season: December to April
This is the easy stretch. December and January score best for comfort, with warm days, cooler nights and almost no rain. February is just as dry and a little hotter. By March and April it's properly hot, with highs of 35°C and sticky nights, so Managua's midday streets feel heavy.
Use the dry months for sightseeing. You can walk around the old centre by Lake Managua, including the Plaza de la Revolución and the old cathedral, without dodging storms. It's also the best time to drive out to Masaya Volcano National Park, where you can look into the crater. Evenings are good for dinner outdoors. Try vigorón, a plate of yuca (cassava), pork crackling and cabbage salad, which you'll find at street stalls and markets.
Rainy season: May to November
Rain is the pattern from May on, and it's heavy. June is rainy on 23 days, and September and October are wet on 25 days each. October is the wettest month, with September close behind. Skies are grey, humidity is high and sun is limited to a few hours a day.
It doesn't rain all day, though. Storms often hit in the afternoon, so mornings can still work for a museum or market visit. Roads can flood and traffic slows. July is a bit drier than its neighbours, with 141 mm, so it's the gentlest of the wet months. November is a good time to try if you want fewer visitors and a drier feel than October, but it's still rated Poor.
Crowds, festivals and when to go
Managua isn't a big beach or resort stop, so crowds are modest all year. Many visitors pass through on their way to Granada, León or the Pacific coast. Demand rises in the dry months, and especially around Christmas, New Year and Semana Santa (Holy Week, in March or April), when many locals travel to the coast and the city can feel quiet.
The best-known local event is the festival of Santo Domingo de Guzmán in early August. Locals carry the saint's image through the city in a long procession, with music and dancing. It falls in the wet season, so expect rain. On 8 December, La Purísima (also called La Gritería) fills the streets with singing and sweets for the Virgin Mary.
If you want a simple answer, go between December and February. Want the festivals and don't mind getting wet? August works.
