Visiting Managua in March
March: hot and mostly dry
Managua in March feels hot by late morning, with warm evenings that don't cool much. The afternoons are mostly sunny, and rain is rare, so you can visit the National Palace of Culture or walk around the old cathedral without often losing time to showers.
The heat can make long walks around the city tiring. Save time outside for shorter visits, and avoid planning a full afternoon on exposed streets. April is just as hot and gets more rain, while February is a little cooler and drier.
Events and crowds
International Women's Day falls on March 8. Semana Santa, Nicaragua's Holy Week, sometimes falls in March and brings religious events and school holidays. Its dates change each year, so the city may be quiet or noticeably busier depending on when you visit.
If you hate crowds, avoid travelling during Semana Santa. It's a popular holiday period, and demand can push up accommodation prices. Outside that week, March is usually calmer than the Christmas and New Year travel period. December and January are Managua's best months overall, so March isn't the peak weather season.
Make the heat work for you
Travelling with kids? Keep the midday outing short, then take a break indoors before heading back out.
For a practical stop, visit Mercado Roberto Huembes for a meal and a look around. You can try vigorón, a local dish of yuca, pork crackling and cabbage salad. The covered market gives you shade from the strong afternoon sun, and it's a useful place to pick up locally made crafts. Check the fare before taking a taxi there; Managua's buses and routes can be hard to work out if you don't know the city.
