Visiting Managua in August
August weather in Managua
August feels hot, sticky and often cloudy. Highs reach 31°C, and rain falls on many days, often making afternoons a poor time for long walks. The showers can interrupt plans, but they don't usually rule out a whole day. Visit the National Palace of Culture or the old cathedral when rain sets in, then enjoy a meal of vigorón, a local dish of yuca, pork and cabbage.
If you hate crowds, avoid the Santo Domingo festivities and explore quieter parts of Managua instead.
Santo Domingo festivities
Managua's biggest August event is the celebration of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, the city's patron saint. On August 1, the saint's small statue travels from Las Sierritas to the old cathedral. The festivities continue with music, dancing and street processions, before the statue returns on August 10.
Expect packed roads and noisy celebrations around the route. If you want to join in, follow the procession from Las Sierritas, where the journey begins. Keep in mind that heavy rain can make the streets muddy.
Crowds and practical tips
Away from the festivities, August is usually quieter than the dry-season peak in December and January. Rainy-season visits can also bring lower prices than those busy months, though Santo Domingo draws large local crowds. September is wetter still, so August can suit you if you're flexible about showers.
Travelling with kids? Keep a rainy-day stop in mind, such as the National Museum inside the National Palace of Culture. For the Santo Domingo procession, use a taxi to reach Las Sierritas rather than trying to drive through closed or crowded streets.
