When to visit Nicaragua

Dry season is the easy choice

Nicaragua has two seasons: dry and green. The dry season runs roughly from December to April. Skies are clear, roads are good and you can plan beach days without worrying. Managua's best months are December and January, when the heat is bearable and the evenings feel pleasant.

Managua is only one city, though, and it's not where most people stay. The capital sits low and inland, so it's hot. Granada, León and the Pacific beaches around San Juan del Sur follow the same dry and wet pattern, but our data only covers Managua. Treat our numbers as a guide to the country's rhythm, not a promise for every town.

Hot spring, wet autumn

April is Managua's hottest month, at 35°C. Afternoons are heavy and the air feels like an oven door. If you're visiting then, spend midday in a pool or a shaded plaza and save walking for the evening.

October is the wettest, with 333 mm of rain. Storms usually build in the afternoon, so mornings can still be fine. Some dirt roads get muddy, and volcano views, like Masaya or Mombacho, can disappear behind cloud. The upside is lush hills, quiet hostels and lower prices.

Holidays and crowds

Semana Santa, Holy Week before Easter, is the big one. Nicaraguans head to the beaches and lakes, buses fill up and rooms in places like San Juan del Sur go fast. Processions in Granada and León are worth seeing, but expect crowds.

Christmas and New Year are also busy. December 7 and 8 bring La Gritería, when people go door to door singing and getting sweets. It's a lovely evening to be around, especially in León. Fireworks and noise are part of it.

High season is December to April, with foreign visitors peaking around the holidays. Low season is May to November. If you don't mind a daily shower, that's when you'll find the most space and the best deals.
