Dry days for city exploring

December feels warm and mostly dry in Managua. Afternoons reach 31°C, while evenings stay mild at around 22°C. Rain is scarce after November's much wetter spell, so you can explore the National Palace of Culture, stroll around Puerto Salvador Allende, or take a day trip to nearby Masaya without frequent showers.

The strong sun can make long walks through the city tiring, especially around midday. Save time outside for later in the day, and don't count on January being cooler: it's usually hotter and even drier.

Christmas in Managua

December brings Christmas lights, church celebrations and La Gritería, Managua's lively evening tradition on December 7. People visit decorated altars and call out, "¿Quién causa tanta alegría?" You may hear the reply, "La Concepción de María." It's a fun way to see local celebrations, though streets near the altars can get busy.

Travelling with kids? La Gritería can be noisy and crowded, so choose a quieter stretch of the route if you want an easier evening.

December is one of Managua's best-weather months, along with January, and the Christmas holidays bring more local visitors. Shopping areas and popular restaurants can feel busier than in the rainy months. Prices may rise around the holiday period, though the biggest crowds are often tied to family travel and celebrations.

For La Gritería, ask locally which streets have altars, then walk between them rather than trying to drive through the festivities. If you'd rather skip the crowds, Puerto Salvador Allende is a calmer choice for an evening meal by Lake Managua. Try vigorón, a Nicaraguan dish of yuca, pork and cabbage salad.
