Tegucigalpa Weather in March

March: hot, mostly dry days

March feels hot in Tegucigalpa, especially in the afternoon. Highs reach 33°C, while evenings cool to around 18°C. Rain is limited, so you'll usually have dry weather for exploring the historic centre or visiting the Basilica of Suyapa. The sun is strong, though, and long walks uphill can feel tiring.

Save outdoor sightseeing for the cooler parts of the day. Avoid a steep midday climb up Cerro Juana Laínez; its open paths offer little shade. With about seven hours of sun each day, you'll still have time to enjoy the city without rushing.

Easter can change the mood

Semana Santa, or Holy Week, falls in March some years and April in others. If it lands in March, expect more Hondurans travelling for the holiday, with busier roads and fuller transport. Tegucigalpa isn't the country's main draw for Holy Week processions, but the capital can still feel busier as people pass through.

If you hate crowds, choose dates outside Holy Week. March is generally quieter than the Christmas and January travel period, and prices are often less pressured. Easter is the exception, so don't assume the whole month is calm.

Make the heat work for you

March is drier than April, with rain on only a few days, but it's warmer than February. A morning visit to the historic centre works well; keep the steep streets and longer walks for then, and leave indoor stops for the hottest hours.

Travelling with kids? Take a taxi to the Basilica of Suyapa rather than turning the uphill approach into a long walk in the heat. If Holy Week overlaps your visit, allow extra time for getting across town, as holiday traffic can slow the journey.
