When to visit Honduras
Dry season, wet season
Honduras has two main seasons. The dry season runs roughly from November to April. The rains come from May to October, usually as heavy afternoon downpours rather than all-day grey. Mornings are often bright, so you can still get plenty done.
In Tegucigalpa, the capital, December and January are the best months. Days are warm but comfortable, and the hills around the city look green. April is the hottest month, at 33°C, and it feels dry and dusty. September is the wettest, with 227 mm of rain. Roads get slick, and traffic crawls when it pours.
Capital, coast and islands
Tegucigalpa sits in the mountains, so it's cooler than the coast. The Caribbean side, including La Ceiba and the Bay Islands of Roatán and Utila, is a different story. It stays wetter for longer, and the rainiest stretch usually comes late in the year. That means you can have sunshine on the Pacific side and storms up north. If you're mixing city and beach, check both before you fix your dates.
Our data covers only Tegucigalpa, so treat the coastal notes as a general guide. Hurricane season runs June to November, and the north coast and islands are the most exposed. Divers often favour the drier months of roughly March to May for calm, clear water.
Holidays and crowds
High season matches the dry months, with the busiest weeks around Christmas, New Year and Semana Santa (Holy Week, the week before Easter). Hondurans head to the beaches then, so Roatán and Tela fill up and rooms get scarce. Book early for those weeks.
Another busy moment is Feria Juniana in San Pedro Sula in June, a city-wide party with music and food. Independence Day on 15 September brings parades and school marches. Travelling with kids? Expect local families on the move during school breaks.
If you hate crowds, try November or early December. The rains are fading, prices ease, and the landscape is still lush.
