October: wet-season days

October is warm, cloudy and very damp in San Salvador. Rain falls on most days, often interrupting plans rather than washing out the whole day. September is wetter, but October still isn't a month for dependable sunshine.

You can visit indoor sights such as the Museo de Arte de El Salvador (MARTE), or explore the historic centre between showers. Save El Boquerón volcano for a clearer spell; rain can make its paths slippery and cloud the crater views. The short daylight window also leaves less room for long outings.

Family dates and rainy plans

October 1 is Children's Day in El Salvador. You may see family activities around the date, though it isn't a major visitor festival. San Salvador's museums and cafés make useful stops when afternoon rain sets in.

Travelling with kids? Keep a flexible plan, with MARTE or the National Palace as a backup to outdoor sightseeing.

Quieter than dry season

October is part of the rainy low season, so you'll generally find fewer visitors than in the popular December-to-March period. Prices can be less pressured than in those busy months, though deals vary. If you dislike wet walks, October may feel like a poor fit for a city break.

For a practical local tip, use the Metrocentro shopping mall as a rain shelter near the city's main avenues. You can wait out a downpour indoors, then take a taxi onward when the streets are less wet. Don't count on a clear afternoon: rain is common, and the city's steep streets can get slick.
