May: rainy-season start

May feels warm, sticky and often cloudy in San Salvador. Rain falls on many days, commonly as heavy showers that can slow traffic and interrupt walks around the Historic Center. You'll still have time for sights such as the National Palace and Metropolitan Cathedral, but keep indoor stops like the Museo Nacional de Antropología in mind for a wet afternoon.

The hills around the city can turn muddy, so May isn't the easiest month for hiking. A short downpour can also make outdoor plans less pleasant. April is much drier, while June gets even more rain.

Holidays and city plans

May brings Labor Day on May 1 and Mother's Day on May 10, both observed in El Salvador. Mother's Day is a family occasion, so restaurants can be busy; reserve a table if you're hoping for a special meal.

If you hate crowds, May is usually calmer than the dry-season months from December to March. It's a shoulder-to-low season, so you may find better hotel rates than during the popular dry months. Rain can still affect your plans, though, and the weather is less reliable than in April.

Make the rain work for you

Travelling with kids? Pair a morning visit to the Historic Center with an indoor afternoon at the Museo Nacional de Antropología. That way, a shower needn't end your day.

For a practical local tip, allow extra time for rides across San Salvador when rain starts. Water can slow traffic on busy routes, including around the Historic Center. If you're heading to Parque Cuscatlán, check whether its outdoor areas suit the weather before you go; the nearby museum gives you a covered alternative. May has less sunshine than the dry season, so keep outdoor plans flexible.
