April's warm afternoons

April feels hot and fairly humid in San Salvador, with highs around 29°C. You'll get about seven hours of sun a day, but expect some cloud and showers too. Rain falls on 11 days, often as a short interruption rather than a washout.

Mornings suit a walk around the Historic Center, including the Metropolitan Cathedral and Plaza Gerardo Barrios. Save indoor stops, such as the National Palace, for sticky afternoons. If you're heading to El Boquerón, the volcano crater above the city, check local conditions first; clouds and rain can spoil the view.

Holy Week and local crowds

Semana Santa, or Holy Week, sometimes falls in April. San Salvador's Catholic churches hold services and processions, especially around the Historic Center. The exact dates change each year, so don't assume they'll fall in April.

If you hate crowds, avoid the Cathedral area during major processions. Easter can bring more visitors and higher prices than a quiet April week. Outside the holiday, April is generally past the busiest stretch of December to March, though it isn't as calm as the wet season.

A useful April tip

May is much wetter than April, so this is a good month for sightseeing before the rains build. Still, showers are common enough to disrupt plans, and the city's steep streets can feel slippery afterwards. Keep your visit to El Rosario Church flexible, then duck into a café near Plaza Libertad if rain sets in.
