May feels warm and damp, with afternoons reaching 27°C and humidity around 75%. Rain falls on 13 days, so expect showers to interrupt some plans. It's still a good month for walks around East Lake and the leafy paths of Wuhan University, but wet pavements can make long outdoor days tiring.

The Yangtze and Han rivers add to the sticky feel. Save indoor stops, such as the Hubei Provincial Museum, for rainy spells, and avoid relying on an all-day hike or picnic staying dry. June is hotter and wetter, while April is cooler and a little drier.

May Day and crowds

China's May Day holiday brings a travel rush. Popular sights, trains and central hotels can feel busier, and prices may rise around the holiday compared with quieter weeks. Outside that break, May is generally less crowded than Wuhan's peak spring blossom season, though it isn't as calm as the best autumn months.

If you hate crowds, visit the Yellow Crane Tower on a weekday outside the holiday, then stroll along the nearby riverfront. The holiday can make that area busy, too.

Make the most of a wet day

May's long daylight gives you room to shift plans when showers arrive. Take a ferry across the Yangtze for a quick change of view, then head to a noodle shop for hot dry noodles, or reganmian, Wuhan's sesame-tossed breakfast dish.

Travelling with kids? Keep East Lake for a drier spell and use the Hubei Provincial Museum as your rainy-day anchor. Its exhibits make a useful indoor break from the damp heat. Check the forecast before setting out, since rain can turn an open-air day around quickly.
