Visiting Wuhan in February
February: damp winter days
Wuhan's February is chilly and often damp. Afternoons reach about 12°C, but mornings can feel cold, with drizzle and lots of cloud. Rain falls on around 11 days, so the day may feel grey even when it's not raining. January is drier and colder; March is milder but wetter.
The weather suits indoor stops such as the Hubei Provincial Museum, where you can see the famous Marquis Yi of Zeng chime bells. A walk around East Lake can still be pleasant between showers, but muddy paths and cold winds make long lakeside outings less appealing. Save a full day of outdoor sightseeing for a clearer forecast.
Lunar New Year crowds
Chinese New Year sometimes falls in February, though its date changes each year. When it does, Wuhan's train stations and major transport routes can be very busy as people travel home. The Lantern Festival, at the end of the holiday period, may bring local celebrations.
If you hate crowds, avoid travelling during the holiday itself. Outside that period, February is generally quieter than Wuhan's popular October and November season, and hotel prices are often lower. Some shops and restaurants may close briefly for the holiday, so your choice of places to eat can shrink.
Make the most of a wet day
Travelling with kids? The museum's indoor galleries are an easier choice than a long outing around East Lake on a cold, wet day.
For a local meal, try hot dry noodles, or reganmian, a Wuhan breakfast dish with sesame paste. Have it near Hubu Alley, by the Yangtze River, then visit the nearby Yellow Crane Tower if the weather clears. The tower's exposed views can feel especially cold on a grey, windy afternoon, so keep it flexible rather than building your whole day around it.
