December feels like winter

Wuhan is cold and often cloudy in December, with chilly mornings and a little over four hours of sun a day. Rain is fairly limited, so you can still walk around the Yellow Crane Tower or explore the Hubei Provincial Museum. The tower's outdoor steps and open viewing areas can feel cold, though, and cloud may soften the river views.

For a warmer break, take your time over a bowl of hot dry noodles, Wuhan's popular breakfast dish. December's shorter daylight also makes long outdoor days harder, so keep East Lake's far-flung paths for brighter spells.

Quiet days and winter customs

December is winter, not one of Wuhan's main festival months. The winter solstice falls in December, and families may mark it with a meal; the date changes each year. Christmas isn't a public holiday in China, though you may see seasonal displays around shopping areas such as Jianghan Road.

If you hate crowds, you'll probably prefer December to October or November, Wuhan's best-known months for pleasant visiting weather. Tourist sights are generally quieter, and stays may cost less than during those popular autumn months. The trade-off is colder, dimmer sightseeing.

A local tip for your visit

Take the metro to Yellow Crane Tower, then spend time inside the pagoda and its exhibits before lingering outside. On a grey day, the indoor displays still make the visit worthwhile, while the high, exposed viewing areas can feel especially chilly.

Travelling with kids? A shorter visit to the tower followed by hot dry noodles nearby can be easier than a long walk beside the Yangtze. December brings about six rainy days, so a wet spell is possible, but you're less likely to lose a whole trip to rain than in January.
