December: cool and quiet

December feels chilly in Jiujiang, especially in the morning and after dark. Afternoons reach about 11°C, while nights can fall to 2°C. Rain is lighter than in November, but damp air and cloudy spells can make the cold feel sharper.

You can explore Xunyang Tower or visit Donglin Temple without summer heat. A clear spell also suits a walk along the Yangtze riverfront. Long, exposed hikes on nearby Mount Lu are less appealing in cold, wet weather; save them for a milder day. Families may find city sights easier than a full day on the mountain.

Winter days out

December brings the Winter Solstice, known as Dongzhi in China. Families often mark it with dumplings or tangyuan, sweet rice balls, though customs vary. Christmas isn't a major traditional holiday in Jiujiang, so don't expect citywide celebrations.

For a low-key city break, December can work well. Rain falls on about seven days, so keep a flexible day for Xunyang Tower or the Jiujiang Museum if the riverfront turns grey. For Mount Lu, ask your hotel about current transport and trail conditions before you travel up.
