April weather

April feels mild, damp and often cloudy in Wuhan. The daytime high is 23°C, while evenings cool to around 13°C. Rain falls on 11 days, and the humidity can make grey afternoons feel a little sticky. It's warmer and wetter than March, and May gets hotter and rainier.

You can still enjoy East Lake's paths, the Yellow Crane Tower and walks along the Yangtze. Keep indoor stops, such as the Hubei Provincial Museum, in mind for rainy spells. Long hikes or a full day outdoors are less appealing when showers interrupt your plans.

Qingming and crowds

Qingming, usually in early April, is a public holiday when families visit and tend ancestral graves. You may notice busy trains and roads as people travel to see relatives. Cherry blossom crowds can also linger around Wuhan University and East Lake, though peak blooms often come earlier.

If you hate crowds, visit popular sights on weekdays and avoid the Qingming travel period. April is a popular spring month, so hotel prices may be firmer than in quieter winter months. It's generally less of a peak season than October and November, Wuhan's best months overall.

Make the most of a wet day

Rain doesn't have to keep you inside all day. Short showers can leave time for a museum visit, a bowl of hot reganmian, Wuhan's sesame-and-chilli breakfast noodles, or a ferry ride across the Yangtze. The ferry gives you city views without committing to a long riverside walk.

Travelling with kids? Pair the Hubei Provincial Museum with a relaxed stop by East Lake when the weather clears. For a practical local tip, check the ferry departure point before heading out: Wuhan has several river crossings, and the Zhonghua Road–Wuhan Passengers Port route is handy for linking Wuchang with Hankou.
