May feels warm, damp and often cloudy. Afternoons can reach 27°C, while evenings are milder. Rain falls on about 12 days, so showers may interrupt a day out. It's still a good month for exploring Lu'an's parks and nearby mountain scenery between wet spells.

The Dabie Mountains suit a walk when the trails are dry, but heavy rain can make paths slippery and views cloudy. June is hotter and wetter, while April is cooler and has less rain. May sits between them, with a mix of comfortable outings and sticky afternoons.

Holidays and crowds

China's Labour Day holiday falls in early May. Lu'an's sights and transport can be busier then, and prices may rise around the holiday. Outside that break, the city is generally calmer than during October, one of the best months to visit.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling during the Labour Day break and visit Tiantangzhai in Jinzhai on a quieter weekday. The mountain scenery is more enjoyable when you're not sharing narrow paths with a holiday rush.

Making the most of May

May has long daylight, but cloud cover and rain can limit clear views. Keep outdoor plans flexible: visit Lu'an's city sights when showers pass, and save a Dabie Mountains outing for a drier day. For a wet afternoon, try Lu'an Guapian, the local green tea, in a teahouse.

A local tip: look for Guapian tea around Qishan, where it's grown, rather than treating it as just another souvenir. Spring is tea season, so you may find fresh leaves and a chance to learn how this famous local tea is made.
