October: crisp autumn days

October feels like a sharp turn from September. Days reach about 7°C, but nights fall below freezing, and the air can feel especially cold once the sun drops. Rain is limited, so you'll often have clear spells for seeing the city.

The National Museum of Mongolia and Gandan Monastery make good stops between outdoor visits. You can also walk around Sükhbaatar Square, but keep outdoor plans flexible for chilly evenings. Skip long countryside hikes unless you're ready for cold, exposed trails.

Events and quieter streets

The Ulaanbaatar International Film Festival is usually held in October, with screenings around the city. It's a welcome indoor plan when the wind picks up. Check the festival programme before you travel, as films and venues vary.

If you hate crowds, October is calmer than the summer peak, when visitors head out on Mongolia tours. Prices are generally less pressured than in summer, though choices for tours and accommodation may narrow as the cold season approaches. May to June and August to September usually bring better visiting weather.

Make the most of the day

There's around ten and a half hours of daylight, so a relaxed city day still works well. Visit the Bogd Khan Palace Museum, then spend the colder part of the afternoon in a café near Sükhbaatar Square. Try buuz, steamed Mongolian dumplings, for a filling meal.

Travelling with kids? Keep outdoor sightseeing close to the city centre, where you can duck indoors when the cold bites. For Gandan Monastery, go during daylight and allow time to explore the courtyards; the evening chill arrives quickly.
