June feels like the start of summer in Ulaanbaatar. Afternoons can be pleasantly warm, while evenings cool down. Rain falls on several days, so a sunny morning can still turn showery later. The long daylight gives you time to visit Sukhbaatar Square, stroll along the Tuul River, or take the cable car up Bogd Khan Mountain.

The city's museums and monasteries are good choices when rain interrupts a walk. Don't count on an easy, dry day for every outdoor plan. June is wetter than May, and July brings even more rain.

Events and crowds

Children's Day on June 1 is a public holiday in Mongolia, with family events around the capital. June also brings more visitors as the summer travel season gets going. You'll usually find the city busier than in the colder months, but it's generally less crowded than during July's Naadam festival.

Prices can start to rise with summer demand, though June is often a calmer, less expensive choice than the Naadam period. If you hate crowds, visit major sights on weekdays and keep July's festival dates in mind when comparing trips.

For a clear-weather outing, take the cable car to Zaisan Hill and look across the city from the memorial. Clouds can limit the view, so keep a museum visit nearby as a backup. Try buuz, steamed meat dumplings, at a local restaurant after a cool evening walk. June is one of the best months to visit, but it still pays to leave room in your day for a rain shower.
