November: deep winter feel

November is already bitterly cold in Ulaanbaatar, even though it's still classed as autumn. Days reach about -4°C, while nights drop to -14°C. There's little rain, but the cold can make long walks uncomfortable. You'll get some sun, though daylight is short, so keep sightseeing close to the city centre. The National Museum of Mongolia and the Gandan Monastery work well for shorter outings; save long hikes for warmer months.

Culture and quieter streets

Mongolian Pride Day, also known as Chinggis Khaan's birthday, is observed in November on a date set by the lunar calendar. It can bring ceremonies and a public-holiday feel to the city. November is low season, so you'll generally find fewer visitors than in the warmer months, and accommodation is often cheaper. If you hate crowds, this is a good time to visit museums and see central sights at a quieter pace.

Make the cold work for you

Treat outdoor plans as short stops, not a full day on foot. Sukhbaatar Square is worth a look, but the open space can feel especially cold; warm up afterwards in a café around Peace Avenue.
