May feels hot, sticky and often cloudy. Daytime highs reach 32°C, and nights stay warm at around 25°C. Rain falls on many days, usually in short, heavy bursts, so a beach day can turn soggy without much warning. April is drier, while June is wetter.

You can still enjoy Yalong Bay's clear-water views between showers, or explore Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone when the sun feels fierce. But long hikes and full days on the sand can be tiring in the heat and humidity. Keep outdoor plans flexible, especially when rain rolls in.

If you hate heat and humidity, Sanya is a tough choice this month.

May Day crowds

China's May Day holiday brings a rush of domestic visitors to Sanya. The busiest spell falls around May 1, when beaches, attractions and flights can feel packed. Hotels and transport often cost more than in quieter months.

Outside the holiday, May is generally less busy than the winter high season, when many visitors come for drier, more comfortable weather. There's no major Sanya festival that reliably fills the whole month, so don't expect a big event to make up for the holiday crowds. If your dates overlap May Day, expect queues at popular spots such as Tianya Haijiao.

Make rainy spells easier

Rain can interrupt boat trips and beach time, so don't make Wuzhizhou Island the only reason for your visit. Keep a flexible day for it, and use a wet spell to wander around Sanya's city centre instead.

For a local food stop, head to First Market for Hainanese chicken rice or freshly cooked seafood. It's a more useful rainy-day plan than waiting out a shower at the beach. At Nanshan, the grounds are extensive and exposed, so a cloudy break can feel much easier for exploring than the hottest part of the afternoon.
