March weather

March feels warm and humid in Sanya, with daytime highs around 30°C and nights near 20°C. Rain is still fairly limited, though showers can interrupt a beach afternoon. The sea and sand suit relaxed days at Dadonghai, while clearer spells work well for the coastal views at Tianya Haijiao.

Sightseeing is comfortable compared with hotter April, but long walks in the midday heat can feel sticky. March gets more rain than February, so keep indoor plans like the Sanya Museum in mind.

Events and crowds

International Women's Day is observed in China on March 8, though it isn't a major Sanya festival. The Hainan Li and Miao Sanyuesan celebration follows the lunar calendar and usually falls later, so it may not happen in March.

Winter is Sanya's peak season, and the best months overall are December to February. March is generally a step down in crowds and prices from that winter rush, though popular beaches and resorts can still be busy. April brings hotter weather and more rain, so March can be a useful shoulder-season choice.

If you hate crowds, try Yalong Bay on a weekday rather than at the weekend.

Making the most of it

With about six rainy days in the month, most visits still leave room for the beach, a boat trip or a stroll through Luhuitou Park. But don't build every day around the sea: cloudy spells and showers can make a beach day less inviting.

For a practical local tip, take the bus or a taxi to Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone and allow plenty of time to walk between its sights. It's a large coastal complex, not a quick stop, and the famous Guanyin statue is exposed to the weather. Check conditions before setting out.
