August: hot and rainy

Sanya stays hot in August, with highs around 31°C and nights near 26°C. The air feels sticky, and rain can fall on 22 days of the month. Cloud and showers often interrupt beach time, so don't count on long, sunny afternoons.

You can still enjoy a swim between showers or explore air-conditioned spots like the shops at Sanya International Duty Free City. For sightseeing, Nanshan Temple works better on a drier spell; heavy rain can make the outdoor grounds less pleasant. Keep plans flexible, and avoid setting aside a whole day for a boat trip if storms are forecast.

Summer crowds and events

Chinese schools are on summer break, so family resorts and popular beaches can feel busy. August isn't Sanya's winter high season, though. December to February is the best-known time to visit, and August's rain often means less demand than those dry months.

Qixi, China's traditional lovers' festival, sometimes falls in August, but its date changes each year. You may see themed offers at malls or hotels, rather than a city-wide event. Travelling with kids? Expect other families at Yalong Bay, especially during school holidays.

Make room for rain

August is wet, but it isn't Sanya's rainiest month: September gets more rain, while July gets slightly less. You'll have around three hours of sunshine a day, so fit beach time around the weather rather than planning every day around it.

If you hate crowds, choose a weekday for Yalong Bay and save indoor stops for rainy spells. For Wuzhizhou Island, check ferry notices before travelling from the mainland; rough seas can disrupt crossings. A missed boat can turn a beach day into a long wait, so keep a backup plan in Haitang Bay.
