May's heat and humidity

May feels hot and sticky in Salalah, even with plenty of sunshine. Afternoons can be tiring, so keep outdoor sightseeing to the cooler parts of the day. The seafront and Al Baleed Archaeological Park work well for a gentler outing, while shaded lanes around Al Haffa Souq are easier to explore later.

The coast is pleasant to look at, but May isn't the cool, green season people often picture in Dhofar. Save strenuous walks and inland trips for another month, or keep them short. Wadi Darbat is best known for its Khareef greenery, which hasn't arrived yet.

Events and crowds

May comes before Khareef, the summer monsoon season that draws visitors to Salalah. The Salalah Tourism Festival is associated with the Khareef period, not May, so don't expect its programme or crowds this month. Islamic holidays follow a lunar calendar and can shift into May, but there's no fixed major May festival to plan around.

You'll generally find a quieter city than during Khareef or the popular December-to-February season. That can mean a calmer visit and better-value stays, though prices vary by hotel and holiday dates. Families who prefer calm outings may enjoy the quieter pace, but the afternoon heat can be hard on young children.

A practical May visit

May is warm and humid, with only a couple of rainy days in the month. Rain is possible, but it won't bring the steady greenery of Khareef. Visit the frankincense displays at Al Baleed when it's cooler, then stop at Al Haffa Souq for frankincense and local snacks.

For a useful local tip, don't make Wadi Darbat the centrepiece of a May trip for waterfalls or lush scenery. Go for its landscape instead, and keep expectations modest until the monsoon arrives.
